Since embarking on my yoga teacher training trip I have been burying my head in the book "Movement" by Gary Cook. Why would I do that you ask? Because I am constantly amazed by what I cannot do! No matter how strong I think I am yoga training has humbled me as if it were my first day at school and my clothes were on backwards. I knew that going in through. After years of endurance training and little else I was amazed at what movements I could not even approach when I first tried CrossFit. Mike at Lakeland CrossFit had me a corner with a P.V.C. pipe because I could not do an overhead squat...with a P.V.C. PIPE!! I was, on that day, determined to change my dysfunction and I am still uncovering them years later. If you defend your limitations they will embrace you for life. Weakness must be discovered in order to become strength. Even the smallest dysfunction has to be searched out and corrected in order to discover how truly strong you can become.
How? How do you discover the weakness...the deficiency the correctible dysfunction?
"JUST MOVE BABY"
You move up, down, side to side- Reach, hang, crawl, and roll and on and on...
I want to move smoothly and gracefully in every direction. To do this I must be mobile, synchronized and strong. New Student's first reaction to mobility is pain because they are finding tension and soreness in places they didn't even know they had. They are like a stressed pile of tension. As Han Solo says, "This is where the fun begins." If we can't move over Godly weight properly why would we want to load it with weight? What is the advantage of loading a series of Bad Positions?
Right now get on the floor: move and stretch...How did that go? Was it hard to do? If it was call me...
We need to MOVE every which way we can think of. I have gone from no overhead squat to hand stand push-ups and training to walk on my hands.
Just move baby...If you allow your mind to take charge you will always end up seated and still. The minds says, "this is safe...This is easy...This is nice...We won't get hurt here." That is all true but life calls for a response. Sometimes you have to move whether you want to or not...
Don't let your mind talk your body into a stiff existence. Being able to move strong is awesome. I love it and you will too! Make the move baby...
